NANMAX (A,DIM) calculates the maximum of A along the dimension DIM of the N-D array X. I have added an explanation and numpy implementation. The rows are the time and the columns are the space. It's just named "the sum function called with the 'omitnan' flag. shape[0] is 2, maximum(a[0], a[1]) is faster than max(a, axis=0).
